It’s no secret that rivalries between these two schools are as old as dirt, but the past few years both Windham and Garfield schools have joined forces for a good cause. In 2011 Mike Chaffee, principal of Windham Schools, felt the rivalry between Windham and Garrettsville had died down over the year and he wanted to revive it. Chaffee wanted to turn something that usually began with a week of pranks between schools into a positive and healthy competition for a good cause. This is how “Rivals for a Cause” was born. In 2011, the schools held a food drive and sold T-shirts to raise monies for St. Jude’s Hospital. Last year both teams raised money for Porter Lyons, a Garfield student who underwent a heart transplant.
This year, both teams are battling it out for Devon Regan who has Cerebral Palsy. His mother Jessica Hostetler, a graduate of Windham High School, was approached by members of the student council and asked if they could dedicate this year’s Rival for a Cause to Devon. Jessica tried a few months back to win a wheelchair accessible van for her son, and although they had a lot of supporters, they did not win the van. So monies donated this year from Rivals for a Cause will help make the van they currently own more accessible for Devon by adding a wheelchair lift and chair for him.
