Have you noticed it’s beginning to stay light a tad bit longer these days? On December 21, we had 9h 12m of daylight with sun setting at 5:01. Today, January 5, we will have 9h 20m of daylight as the sun sets at 5:12 pm. And by the end of the month, we will have 10h 04m of daylight! I noticed this yesterday as I was driving home and happened to look at the clock which read 5 pm and it wasn’t as dark.
I love this time of year as I look ahead with great anticipation to the many things I enjoy about life – which includes gardening! At this time of year, I bring out the gardening catalogs and garden plan books and just look at pictures, thinking about what I want to plant, what I want to change in the landscape, and what critters I’d like to attract (as well as how to keep others away).
If you’re a community garden plot owner, you can start looking for announcements as to when they are making plots available. And if you live in Aurora – that time is now! I was checking out their parks and recreation winter programs and events brochure, which you can view HERE, and noticed that beginning tomorrow, January 6, if you were a community plot owner last year, you may renew your same plot. Renewing the same plot is open until February 7. If you want to add another, on February 10 through the 21st you may do so. Then, on the 24th it is open to new folks who want to purchase a plot.
The brochure has plenty of programs to choose from for all ages including scores of fitness classes, Red Cross babysitter training, cursive writing (since it was ousted from the school), language courses, and special courses such as backyard naturalist programs, a one time piano or guitar course that will allow you continue on your own, a host of art offerings, and even How to Become a Savvy Shopper with Joe the Coupon Guy! And our favorite – The Art of Positive Thinking – just what we at Portage News hope you are focusing on this year!
Be sure to check out the full list on the brochure. You’re certain to find something new to try this year or something to improve upon.
Cheers for longer days, improved selves, and brighter thoughts for 2014!
