Diane Austin wears a ruby ring every day. It’s not a ring that she purchased at a fine jewelry store or something she discovered at a garage sale or antique shop. It goes much further back. Back to the days when Diane was a little girl in the kitchen with her grandma. Back to days when she would listen as her grandma talked and she carefully watched as she rolled out pie crust, mixed special secret ingredients into fruit flavored fillings, then baked them for the perfect length of time so the crust would be golden, flaky, and would melt-in-your mouth with every single bite. Grandma would talk and share her secrets with her grand daughter so one day she too could bake the same pies with her own grandchildren.

“I wear that ruby ring every day,” says Diane, “to remind me of her.” Grandma was the first generation of these pie bakers, and now Diane is passing on this family recipe once again, this time to the fifth generation, to her own 4 year old grand daughter. Why? Because these aren’t just any ol’ pies! They have been the star performer through many generations, receiving standing ovations from satisfied palates of family, friends, and lots of other folks. “I’d put these pies up against any Amish or Hartville pie any day!” says Diane with pride, who still makes them from scratch with the same old fashioned ingredients Grandma used.

And if you have ever been to The Wistful Cafe and Bakery in Edinburg, then you can probably chime in with your own praises for these one-of-a-kind, homemade delights. I wonder if Grandma had the slightest inkling that one day her pies would be part of a much-loved and growing cafe and bakery business in this little community?

From Farm Kitchen to Family Owned Cafe

“We opened five years ago in May,” shares Diane. “My family owned and operated a feed and farm supply for over 25 years. Due to some health issues, we needed to down size. I always wanted to have a restaurant but I wasn’t sure what I could do. I contacted the Portage County Health Department. The staff was a huge help and gave me guidance and direction. We opened as a small coffee shop and cafe, serving breakfast and lunch items.”

Now they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and almost all of these dishes are made from scratch, too. “Our sausage gravy is one of the favorites. We buy our sausage from local butchers and we add a touch of local maple syrup. All of our baked goods are made from scratch, including our pie crusts, of course!”

Many exciting changes have occurred since opening date including a new kitchen and more menu options; pizza, sirloin steak, and pork chops.

“My idea for The Wistful Cafe was to be a small, down home restaurant, with good food and reasonable prices. We take pride in making our customers feel like family.”

What do you think? Has she achieved her goal?

“We were there for breakfast today with our grandson. They go out of their way to be accommodating. The homemade apple sauce was delicious. Our grandson chowed down on that. The home made fresh bread is also delicious.” ~Dave H.

“Ever since I found this place, I’m here about 3 times a week. It’s that good.” ~Ken K.
