“The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach.” ~Henry Beston, Author

The Outermost House: A Year of Life On The Great Beach of Cape Cod

All of us have heard the rain, most of us have heard the sound of wind through a forest, though it may not have been primeval, but of the three listed above by the author, it would be hearing the sound of the outer ocean on the beach where we fall short. It requires traveling, and traveling costs money! And for some, that is not an easy thing to come by. That’s where Trips Ahoy comes in.

Trips Ahoy Foundation, Inc. exists to enrich the lives of adults with developmental disabilities served by Leeda Northeast, an agency that provides services and supports, including a day program. It is a non-profit organization which has been in operation now for eight years and is registered with the State of Ohio. Through fundraising efforts, they have been able to enhance the lives of these individuals by providing the opportunity to take numerous vacations to places like the Smokey Mountains, Cape Cod, and to Virginia Beach, pictured below, where Robert and canine traveler Cooper are taking a leisurely stroll on the sand during their recent September trip.

Quiet Walk on the beach

Trips Ahoy did several fundraisers this past year in order to help finance the trip,” says Belinda Sweeney, President of Trips Ahoy. “There were a total of 16 individuals and 6 staff on the vacation. They all had a great time! They went to the Aquarium one day and several individuals went on a dolphin watch cruise, went to the Boardwalk, and spent a special night out to dinner to celebrate two birthdays, with cake and ice cream back at the house.”

The dog is a service dog that belongs to Paul as he is visually impaired. “I think he has been on more vacations than me!” says Belinda. “The picture of the house is the one that was rented for the week, right on the beach. It had an indoor and outdoor pool also.”

Make a Difference – Get Involved!

Trips Ahoy is an all volunteer organization. They hold several fund raisers throughout the year to help finance these trips and other activities they host. Consider becoming a part!

The Trips Ahoy Foundation is seeking individuals interested in joining our not-for-profit corporation which uses funds raised to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. If you are interested, membership costs $1 and gives people the ability to have input in board membership, fundraising activities, and how funds are spent. Please contact Belinda Sweeney, Cassandra Rosenberger, or Megan Sweeney at (330)392-6006. We would love to have you work with us.
