You’re an animal lover. You probably wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. How much do you know about rabies? Take this short quiz and see how you fur – or fare!
1. Animals with rabies will develop hypersensitivity to light and sound as well as paralysis of the nerves that control the head and throat.
2. The rabies virus is short-lived when exposed to open air—it can only survive in saliva and dies when the animal’s saliva dries up.
3. The incubation period for rabies is 10 to 14 days (the time elapsed between exposure to a disease and when signs and symptoms first become apparent).
4. Rabies can’t go through unbroken skin.
5. The most common rabies carriers in the U.S. are wolves, dogs, and mice.
6. Wildlife account for more than 90 percent of all reported rabies cases.
7. Over the past 10 years, rabies has killed only a total of 28 people in the U. S.
8. Rabies are more common in dogs than cats.
If you haven’t yet vaccinated your pet for rabies, now’s your chance! The Portage Dog Warden’s Office and Shelter along with Rootstown Veterinary Hospital is hosting a clinic on Sunday. For only $10 per cat or dog, you can obtain a vaccine. As an animal lover, take a few minutes and get your cat and/or dog the vaccine. You’ll guarantee peace of mind for yourself, family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who comes in contact with your pet. And you’ll guard your much-loved pet from the possibility of a very untimely and miserable end. First come, first served.
