As a reader of Portage News, you know our mission is to report positive news to the people of Portage County. One of the most fun and rewarding parts of our reporting is featuring some of the rescues in our area that are working to place animals into loving homes. It’s always so exciting to celebrate with a rescue that has just found that special ‘furever’ and now, in this case, ‘feathered-ever’ home for a formerly homeless animal. We’ll now be including posts about Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary beginning with this introduction…read on!

Happy Trails logoOur Mission

Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and provides an adoption program for abused, abandoned, and neglected farm animals such as horses, ponies, potbelly pigs, farm pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, goats, and cows. Happy Trails serves the entire state of Ohio and any other state requesting our help, and works in cooperation with county humane societies, animal protective leagues, and local and state law enforcement officers. Animals in our program must have been removed from a situation of abuse, neglect or abandonment by law officials, and cruelty charges must be filed against the person(s) responsible for the crime.

Can’t Take a Rescued Horse Home?

Become a Guardian Angel for an abused or neglected horse through our monthly sponsorship program.

The horses featured here are in the Happy Trails Foster Home Program. This means that they are being housed and cared for temporarily at a private home, usually for a specific reason. Often a foster home may be able to give an individual horse more personal attention, address specific needs, or work with it regarding training and trail riding. Foster homes may generously donate the use of their facilities and barn space, big pastures, and devote their time to the tedious daily care of a big, rescued animal. However, Happy Trails is still responsible to pay for vet bills, grain, hay, bedding, hoof trimming, vaccinations, teeth floating and deworming for all the horses in foster care until we find a permanent adoptive home for them.

So if you love horses but might not have room to adopt one and take it home with you, please consider joining the Happy Trails Guardian Angel Sponsorship Program to help us care for the rescued horses in foster care.

How About a Feathered Friend!

Ducks

Happy Trails always has an assortment of ducks available for adoption. All ducks adopted from Happy Trails must have a safe shelter that is closed and secure at night in order to protect them from predators such as fox, coyotes, raccoons, mink, weasels and stray dogs. In addition, we recommend a secure fenced yard for the daily turn out of the ducks. We do not adopt rescued domestic ducks to open ponds unless that pond is fenced and the ducks are placed in a safe shelter overnight. Domestic ducks are unable to fly away from wildlife and other predators and we strive to place our rescued ducks in as safe of an environment as possible.

Chickens

Happy Trails always has an assortment of chickens available for adoption. Our assortment of chickens includes hens and roosters of varying breeds. Many of the roosters have been removed from cock-fighting rings and must be adopted to single bird homes because of their fighting instinct. These roosters are very friendly with people but do not get along with other birds. All chickens adopted from Happy Trails must have a safe shelter that is closed and secure at night in order to protect them from predators. In addition, we recommend a secure fenced yard for the daily turn out of the chickens.

Geese

Happy Trails always has an assortment of geese available for adoption. All geese adopted from Happy Trails must have a safe shelter that is closed and secure at night in order to protect them from predators. In addition, we recommend a secure fenced yard for the daily turn out of the geese.

All feathered friends adopted from Happy Trails must be adopted in pairs or adopted to homes that already have a companion animal. Due to the number of feathered friends in and out of Happy Trails, we are only listing a few in each category. To make inquiries about additional feathered friends available for adoption, contact us and we will be glad to provide further information.
