My only complaint about strawberry season is that it’s too short! This year, especially, due to the harsh winter, some folks had no berries and others’ were much later. But a few have come through and they are sweet, juicy, and won’t last much longer. Here’s a couple of tried and true Portage County spots to pick and one in Geauga County. Feel free to add a location in the comments section below if you know of other locations. Everyone would appreciate knowing! If you’re new to strawberry picking, Walnut Drive Gardens has provided some helpful how-to advice just for you. So grab your kids, grab your containers and start your gathering before they’re gone!

Strawberry Tips

  • Look gently under the leaves. Some of the nicest berries are there!
  • Place berries gently in basket.
  • Cover with a towel and refrigerate berries.
  • Don’t wash the berries until you are ready to use them.
  • Hull the berries after gently washing them.
  • If handled carefully, berries will keep 3 days in the refrigerator.
  • If you are freezing berries, do it as soon as possible to keep all the quality.
  • To freeze the berries whole: wash, hull, (gently toss in sugar if you like), scatter berries on a cookie sheet and freeze. When frozen, put in freezer bags.
  • Another way to freeze berries is to wash, hull and slice the berries. Add sugar and mix gently. Put in rigid freezer containers. Leave 1/2 inch head space and freeze.
