It’s time for spring break again, and you may be scrambling to find something fun to do with your family. Maybe your budget won’t allow you to jet off to a warmer locale, but don’t fret. You can still have plenty of fun, close to home, without spending a fortune. All you need is a positive outlook and a few good ideas:
It’s as easy as a walk in the park
Pack up the kids and the pooch for a visit your favorite park, or check out the Portage Park District’s page to find a new favorite. There, you’ll also find a listing of cool activities including a wildflower scavenger hunt, birding walks and a special lunar eclipse vernal pool party – but be sure and dress for the weather, since the frogs and salamanders are the only ones who’ll be swimming that day.
Veg out with an old classic
Since springtime often brings soggy weather, why not spend a rainy day enjoying a classic movie or TV series marathon? Work on honing those movie critic skills by watching Walt Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland,” then Tim Burton’s version, to see which one your family likes better, and why. Or, decide who makes a better Willy Wonka – Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp. You can order them through Netflix or visit the Portage County District Library website to borrow them for free!
Get Your Craft On
Check out Pinterest or your favorite craft store for project ideas. For the crafting-challenged, keep it simple and pick up some new coloring books. When you dust off your crayons, markers and colored pencils, you’ll feel like a kid again!
Build a fire
Throw some logs in the fireplace, or go old school with a backyard bonfire. Nothing is as relaxing as kicking back and watching the flames dance. Add some s’mores, and you’ve got a sweet evening of fun.
Become a tourist at home
Step outside of your normal routine and try something new. A trip to the roller-skating or ice skating rink is a fun way to spend some time. Or, why not check out KSU’s Fashion or May 4th museums, or another local treasure you’ve been meaning to visit?
Spending time together, no matter what activities you choose, will help create wonderful family memories. With a little creative thinking, you can have an awesome spring break at home without breaking the bank.
