Princesses, an enchantress, a few old grannies and a devil: These are some of the characters that will invade the Macklin Center Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3, as part of “Once Upon a Time: Not Your Ordinary Fairy Tale.”
“Once Upon a Time” is a modern, music-infused comedy that re-tells many stories compiled by the Brothers Grimm via parody. Two narrators (played by SHS seniors Alex Hahn & Emily Fernandez) star in this romp, telling the stories of classic characters such as Rapunzel (senior, Cassidy Emch), Cinderella (junior, Alexis DeToro), Snow White (sophomore, Emily Wilkinson), Rumpelstiltskin (sophomore, Joe Beaver) and many, many more. Over 40 performers are involved, including vocalists who will perform classic songs such as “Part of Your World”, “Candle in the Wind”, “Once Upon a Dream” and more, and also modern favorites including a Sara Bareilles song and princess rap battles.
The cast is comprised of primarily high school students, but also contains members whose ages range from 7 to adult. Showcasing how communities can partner and strengthen one another, Ravenna High School’s scenic design class, led by instructor Beth Lutz, volunteered its time and expertise to build a number of set pieces for the show. “This show will entertain people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Director Jim Boardwine. “I think our imagery will absolutely wow
children (and all for that matter); the jokes are witty and will amuse adults, and the music is diverse and second to none in this area. In short, Streetsboro Theatre attendees always get a professional-quality entertainment experience, similar to what they might receive in Cleveland, but at a fraction of the cost — and in their backyards with free parking!”
The performances will be Friday, May 1, at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. Show tickets are $10 and dinner tickets are $10. Doors open 2 hours before the show, with dinner being served 1 hour before showtime. Seating is general admission: first-come, first-served, with the exception of five VIP tables (available online) for each show.
Visit www.streetsborotheatre.org to buy tickets online. Or, they may be purchased at the high school office.
