Here’s my favorite recipe for Apple Pie!
Ingredients:
Crust:
- 1 1/4 cups flour (1/2 teaspoon of salt, maybe a bit more)
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 4 to 5 tablespoons COLD water
Apple filling:
- 6 cups thin sliced apples(about)
- 3/4 cups sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Crumb topping:
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 3 tbsp. butter
Heat the oven to 375 degrees.
Make your crust first.
Cut shortening into flour / salt mixture until little crumbs form. Add water one tablespoon at a time until moistened but not to wet. Be sure to flour the counter/ roller before rolling out.
Place crust in in pie pan.
In a bowl mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add apple slices and gently mix up until coated. Put mix into pie crust.
Roll out second crust and lay on top of pie. Pinch edges. Cut slits in the top to avoid excessive bubbling.
-or-
Stir together 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 brown sugar. Cut in 3 tablespoons of butter with a pastry cutter. Sprinkle over pie
Bake for 25 minutes at 375 degrees with aluminum foil on the edges. After 25 minutes, remove foil from edges, bake another 18-23 minutes. (For crumb topping, watch the crust on the last 18-23 minutes, as it bakes a bit quicker than a double crust pie!)
