Nothing says New Year’s Eve like drinking too much. Don’t spend the first day of the New Year miserable with a hangover. If you’ve had too much to drink try one of these hangover cures. You’ll be glad you did.
Drink water
This is the most tried-and-true hangover cure for a reason: it works. It’s no secret that a hangover is the body’s revolt against the dehydration caused by drinking. So, your best bet is rehydration. Drink lots of water. The quicker you can get your body’s natural balance back, the better off you’ll be.
Eat
Food will help you restore your body’s balance. If you’re queasy, go for some crackers or pretzels. These foods will boost your blood sugar and give you the energy you lack. Also, try a banana to replace the potassium you lost during your revelry.
Exercise
It might seem counter-intuitive, but resist the urge to sit on the couch like the bum you feel like and get in a light workout. The alcohol in the blood needs to be metabolized, and that requires movement. Do some light cardio or yoga. Try to avoid heavy exercises that cause you to sweat a lot because that may dehydrate you even more and make you feel worse.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol
Remember everything you’ve heard about drinking coffee to relieve a hangover or people who swear by the “hair of the dog” remedy. None of it’s true. Caffeine will further dehydrate you and make you feel worse, so all you’ll be is hung over and wide-awake. Drinking alcohol will do absolutely nothing to cure the effects of a hangover; in fact it will make you feel worse.
Sleep
Your body needs rest and time to get over drinking too much. Sleep will provide both of those things. Stay in bed a little longer than usual and take an afternoon nap if you feel the need to.
Ginger root
It’s long been known that ginger has some curative properties that help to ease a queasy stomach. That’s why we drink ginger ale when we’re sick. The same principle applies to the nausea that is felt after a night of over-imbibing. If you don’t have any ginger ale on hand, brew some ginger tea by steeping some fresh ginger in hot water for 10 minutes.
Honey and lemon
Drinking a concoction of hot water, honey and lemon can also help a hangover. It’s easy to swallow and will replenish the fluids and sugars that were lost while drinking.
Wasabi bath
Much of relieving a hangover is about replacing what was lost while drinking. You also need to be concerned about losing what went in. So, if you’re feeling wonky after a night of drinking, treat yourself to a wasabi bath the next day. Adding a bit of wasabi powder or bath salts to your bath water will help to remove the toxins that built up in the body.
Eat tomatoes
Tomatoes are full of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that your body needs to have replaced after a night of heavy drinking. So, drink some tomato juice, slice some fresh tomatoes, or top your pasta with some red sauce.
Pickle juice
If all else fails and you still feel like you’ve been hit by a truck, try drinking some pickle juice. This is an old world cure from Poland that many folks swear by.
