Just the other day, my mother in law taught my two year old son to “raise the roof” and shout, “Woot Woot!” as he lifts his hands above his head. I thought it was just a cute two year old thing at first, but when I gave it a try myself I realized that I couldn’t raise my hands over my head without feeling happier, smiling, and feeling more energized.
After doing a little research I found this amazing fact:
Blind olympians who run track events instinctively raise their hands over their head in a “winner” pose even though they have never seen another person do that with their own eyes. As I read and watched even more about this subject I found that physical actions like raising your hands up in a winner’s pose will actually create the mental and emotional stimulus to make you feel happier. It’s incredible!
So what do you need to do? Right now, wherever you are, raise your hands above your head and hold them there for two minutes. If you’re doing that right now, I bet you are smiling and feeling happier already. It really works! Do this every day, before a stressful meeting, or just for fun, and I can promise you that your life will improve. Raise the roof!
2. Look at Cute Pictures for Five Minutes
What is your favorite baby animal? Puppies, dolphins, or polar bears? What about pictures of your children, cousins, or grandchildren? If you haven’t looked at pictures like that yet today, take a minute and do so. You can even just do a google image search for baby polar bears and you’ll see what I mean. If you look at those cute little fellas, or you look at a picture of your loved ones, you will immediately start to feel those happy loving emotions.
As simple as it may seem, taking time to look at and think about happy and beautiful animals and people that we love will improve your mood, help you focus, and make you more cheerful. Just take a few minutes each day and find something wonderful like that to look at. It will improve your day immensely!
3. Get Moving!
Did you know that the more you sit still in your chair, drive around, or choose to be inactive, the more prone you could be to depression? It’s a proven scientific fact that people who stay active on a daily basis are healthier in the long run. The good news is that you don’t have to be a marathon runner, or a fitness geek to be active. All you have to do is take five minutes right now and get up. You can walk to get the mail. You can walk outside and take a few deep breaths. You can get up and move around just for a quick break.
If you move around for just five minutes every hour, you’ll dramatically increase your activity and you’ll stimulate your mind, your body, and your emotional health will improve as well. Today, as you settle in to do your tasks, take your calls, and conquer the work you have, don’t forget to plan a few minutes every hour to get up and move around. It’s a great way to take a break and get some fresh air, fresh perspective, and also to get your body into a new position. Give it a try!
