Fun, Fundamentals & Food!

camp dayHiram College recently held an exciting event, Youth Camp Day, to honor the kids who participated in the Youth Football Camp. The campers and their families were invited to the football game on October 5 to be recognized during halftime. My son Billy was a participant of the camp, and we attended the game. It was a fun day. We cheered for the Terriers and then at halftime, we walked onto the field. The campers’ names and ages were announced over the loud speaker and each camper waved to the crowd. The Youth Camp Day was a special way to commemorate the kids’ participation in the camp.

The football camp is designed for youth entering grades 3-8. It runs for three days in June. The sessions take place at Henry Field and in the Martin Field House at Hiram College. The kids receive instruction from both Hiram coaches and players. The program focuses on passing, catching, punting, kicking, teamwork, footwork, agilities, and sportsmanship. The cost, as of this past year, was $120. The cost included lunch in the college cafeteria and use of the swimming pool. The campers received a camp tee-shirt, a camp photo, and a football to take home with them.

campBilly attended the camp for three years. One of his favorite activities was a two-touch football game played after lunch. Lunchtime was also a highlight of the day. However, the coaches warned the campers not to over-indulge because there have been previous incidents of the kids eating too much and then not feeling well! Another popular activity for the kids was jumping in the pool at the end of the day!

We’re happy that the camp will be offered again next year. We feel it’s a rewarding program for kids interested in football because it helps enhance their skills and encourages their desire to play. The coaching instruction is invaluable. The college players are positive role-models for the campers and the kids are able to enjoy a little bit of the college experience. The Youth Camp Day is a fun and memorable additional benefit to attending the camp!
