If you have been a resident of Portage County, particularly of Garrettsville, for any length of time, Jerry Kehoe Used Cars has become a landmark in the community having been in business for over 30 years.
For the last decade, Eric Hedge, an employee, has been faithfully serving customers every day, providing quality repairs, honest sales, and striving for excellence in customer relations. As the owner Jerry Kehoe drew closer to retirement, what would happen to the business? That’s what Eric and his wife Meredith were wondering during a conversation one day with Jerry. “We were speaking with Jerry about a plan for the business once he retired,” said Meredith, “and, as we found out, there wasn’t one. So we offered to purchase the business and here we are.” That was back in early 2013.
It made perfect sense, since both come from families who have lived in Portage County for most of their lives. “Growing up [in the county], we both have fond memories,” shares Meredith who, together with Eric, is very involved in their community. “We are members of the Chamber of Commerce, are involved with People Tree and have donated to the food cupboard. We have been a sponsor for the car shows this summer as well as a softball and soccer league. We are really trying to change the way people perceive a Used Car Dealer.” And with recent remodeling completed, they are now a designated Garrettsville-Nelson area food bank and local Toys for Tots drop off point.
You may have noticed that the number of cars offered on the lot has been reduced since the new owners took over. “Back in July we had a major flood where we lost 25 cars and had water damage to our building. We have since reduced the number of vehicles, but what we do have is of higher quality. Let me make it perfectly clear,” states Meredith, “ all vehicles that were involved in the flood are gone. We have also added to most of the vehicles a 6 months/7500 mile warranty. So the customer can have peace of mind with their purchase.” Could this be another case of ‘less is more?’ I would say so! But it goes right along with their mission statement:
“Our goal in business is to be a trustworthy partner with our customers and vendors on both the sales and service of any pre-owned motor vehicle. To treat our customers, potential customers, and vendors with respect. To always strive to earn their trust and business. We must remember….. It’s because of them, WE ARE IN BUSINESS.”
The Hedges strive to achieve a reputation built upon trust. “We do good work at a fair price. We also will finance repairs under the correct set of circumstances. We look at each individual situation.”

Along with selling used cars, many don’t know that Jerry Kehoe Used Cars is also a full service repair shop. “We also sell tires, batteries, windshield wipers etc. We are your one stop shop for motor vehicle sales and service,” says Meredith.
As 2013 comes to a close, Meredith says the couple has enjoyed this new undertaking as a business owner in the community. “Owning our own business has been great as we have been able to work together as well as have our family members involved also. We really do feel we are providing a service to our community by being one of the few ‘buy here pay here’ lots that offer the service we do with the commitment to the customer we have.”
For the holiday season, Jerry Kehoe Used Cars is extending a ‘No Payments until February 1st with corresponding down payment!” In other words, down payment depends on total cost of the vehicle with a typical minimum down payment of at least $500.00.
They also have gift certificates available for either a hand vehicle wash and vacuum or a complete vehicle detail. The hand wash is $25.00 and the detail is $139.00. “We also are running a combination special so you can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Get both the hand wash and detail for the low price of $150.00.” What a nice gift for your car with those nasty winters Northeast Ohio can throw at it!
