“I have learned to see the importance of training the whole horse,” says Joan Sladek, a certified Lyons Instructor who was taught by John and Josh Lyons the art of horsemanship. Joan is the founder of JS Horsemanship which trains out of Sand Hill Stable in Mantua and will begin offering private classes in January for both children and adults. Her instruction will center around four building blocks:
1. The horse must understand what is being asked.
2. The horse needs to be able to do what is asked.
3. The horse should be confident and relaxed doing what is asked.
4. The horse needs to do what is asked, when asked, using all the energy required.
“A horse is physical, mental, and emotional. A horse is a unique individual with a unique skill set, a unique history, and an individual personality. All this must be considered as we train each individual horse,” explains Joan.
Sand Hill Stables is where she is offering classes and clinics using her methods to improve the understanding of and the relationship with your horse. “The exercises I teach bring about positive changes in both the horse and the rider.”
