Cross country skiing is one of the many outdoor recreational activities that singles, couples, and families can enjoy together. Unlike downhill skiing, once equipment has been secured (which often times can be through family, friends and great sales!) you can enjoy hours of free fun and get a fantastic low impact, high cardio workout at the same time. For an adult, skis can last almost a lifetime. There are so many places around Portage County you can go, including one of the many Portage Park District’s beautiful parks, or you can take a little ride to one these listed below for a change of scenery. Many of these Ohio state parks offer lodging and other winter fun for the committed outdoor winter enthusiast. Visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website for a full list of other winter sporting events and find your way to lodging at a specific location as well.
Cross Country skiing is permitted on multiple use trails at a number of parks. Many parks also allow cross-country skiing where there are expanses of open areas such as picnic areas, shoreline areas and golf courses. Cross-country skiing is allowed only when the ground is frozen and completely covered with snow or ice. Trails are not groomed and skiers must provide their own equipment.
