Did you know?
- One pint of blood can save up to three lives?
- Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion?
- 5 million patients ion the U.S. need blood every year?
From Jan. 2 through Feb. 17, a total of nearly 1,500 Red Cross blood drives in 34 states and Washington, D.C. have been cancelled, resulting in about 50,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. The Red Cross urgently needs donors to help meet the needs of local hospital patients. All donors will receive a Red Cross First Aid Kit (while supplies last) and be entered to win fabulous raffle prizes from the Fairways!
The Red Cross Facebook page is full of so many inspiring stories! Many of those who give have been the recipient of blood themselves and, out of gratefulness for a life they may not otherwise have, are regular donors. Here’s one such story:
“After representing the American Red Cross at the White House during the France Arrival Ceremony, Red Cross volunteer, blood recipient, and all-around rock star, Brian Boyle, stopped by the Red Cross to make his 9th blood donation. “I know how important the need for blood is at the moment with all the winter weather storms we have been having,” he said. Brian needed 36 blood transfusions and 13 plasma treatments following a car accident in 2004. He now competes in triathlons and running events, proudly wearing the Red Cross logo on his race suits.” Read more of Brian’s story HERE.
You will never know when you or someone you love may need blood. Let’s keep the Portage County blood bank full!
