Frigid Air to Hold Icy Grip on Cleveland

Frigid air will remain throughout the week around Cleveland following a temperature drop to near 0F, which is the record low for the city set back in 1884…
…and on it goes.
So – just for fun, I thought I would check out some stats. Well – maybe it’s not THAT fun, but at least it will pass some time! These are current lists.

America’s 20 Coldest Major Cities
I found it interesting that Ohio was the only state that appeared three times on the list!
For reference, here’s the #1 coldest:
Minneapolis/St. Paul (Avg. Dec-Feb Temp: 18.7 degrees)
#11: Toledo, Ohio (Avg. Dec-Feb Temp: 27.8 degrees)
Toledo’s all-time record low was -20 degrees set on Jan. 21, 1984. On average, subzero cold occurs 6-7 days each year, while subfreezing temperatures occur 128 days a year there.
#13: Akron, Ohio (Avg. Dec-Feb Temp: 28.5 degrees)
Akron’s all-time record low was -25 degrees set on Jan. 19, 1994. On average, subzero cold occurs 3-4 days each year, while subfreezing temperatures occur 123 days a year there.
#14: Cleveland (Avg. Dec-Feb Temp: 30.3 degrees)
Cleveland’s all-time record low was -20 degrees set on Jan. 19, 1994. On average, subzero cold occurs 3-4 days each year, while subfreezing temperatures occur 116 days a year there.

#1: Syracuse, N.Y. (Avg. Yearly Snow: 126.3 inches)
#8: Cleveland (Avg. Yearly Snow: 68.5 inches)
Snow stats:
- Record snowiest day: Nov. 10, 1913 (17.4 inches)
- Record snow depth: Feb. 5, 2009 (22 inches)
- Average snowiest month: January (18.9 inches)
- Record snowiest month: January 1978 (42.8 inches)

On the brighter side, here’s what we have to look forward to in March!
The month of March is characterized by rapidly rising daily high temperatures, with daily highs increasing from 41°F to 52°F over the course of the month, exceeding 69°F or dropping below 26°F only one day in ten.
