Over 30 people of all ages recently enjoyed a rare guided hike at the Portage Park District’s Chagrin Headwaters Preserve in Mantua. Although the Park District has owned the property for over 10 years after receiving it through donations, it hasn’t had the funds to open it as a park. The 95-acre property includes rolling woods, fields, wetlands and the Aurora Branch of the Chagrin River. Local photographer and musician Brad Bolton captured these images.

Executive Director Christine Craycroft said, “If the voters approve Issue 10 on May 6, this and other properties the district owns could be opened to the public.” The ½ mill levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 property $17.50 a year or $1.50 per month.
Additional hikes at other closed properties will be held on April 27 at the Morgan Preserve and on May 4 at the Franklin Bog Preserve—both beginning at 2:00 p.m. Individuals interested in attending these hikes should contact the Portage Park District Office at 330-297-7728 or visit the park district website.
