“Making hats, scarves, and cotton washcloths for those in need.” How does that sound for a purposeful way to spend your time!

Knitting for Those in Need in Kent (KTN) promotes the use of the yarn arts of loom knitting, needle knitting, and crochet to create warm and safe items to serve people in need. Their mission is pretty simple:

“Knitting for Those in Need is a not for profit charitable organization that promotes the use of the yarn arts of loom knitting, needle knitting and crochet to create warm and safe items to serve people in need. We also strive to empower people by teaching “knitting” skills at community and campus gatherings. Our goal is to make a significant impact by creating warmer, safer and more hopeful communities.”

Here’s an example of a recent request:

“We have been asked to provide warm thumbless mittens for handicapped adults and children. We know this is not something everyone can do, but for those of you who can help meet this need, please consider helping.” They will provide the yarn. You can contact them at learn.create.serve@gmail.com or call 330-552-8299 for free instructions for this particular project.

Right now, through June, KTN is holding a yarn drive. No doubt many of you ladies have yarn scattered around the house in various places that you were sure you would use but, alas, it still ‘sitteth’ in the craft bin! Let’s get real! Will you ever use it? Here are two suggestions:

  • donate it to Knitting for Those in Need so someone else can knit a useful warm item for the needy OR
  • join them at one of their locations and do it yourself!

Maybe you just needed this little push to get out there and start doing something you love again with a group of people (even a few men!) who enjoy the gatherings as much as the cause it pertains to.

“Now is the time for us to knit, crochet, and loom knit the most,” they share on their Facebook page, “so we will be ready to meet needs in the fall and winter. No experience or supplies needed. All that is needed is your caring heart and hands. The need is great and we can make a significant impact on it. Bring a friend and share the joy of giving.”

They meet every Tuesday from 6-8 pm at Scribbles Coffee Co. “Please join us so we can serve many as we create with the skills we have learned.”
