“We need help from our local rescues. The shelter is bursting at the seams with dogs; mostly pit bulls. Please come adopt your new cuddle buddy today or this week. We are the county animal control facility which means we do not refuse any stray dog. We may have to refuse owner surrenders if we are full. We do not euthanize for space and haven’t in over 6 years.”
We oftentimes think of dog wardens as those who collect stray dogs and cats roaming the streets, take them to the county holding area where they sit for a few days, then are “eliminated” if no one comes to call…
Thankfully, that’s not the case at the Portage County Dog Warden’s! They work closely with wonderful local rescues like Rose’s Rescue, Canine Lifeline, Marilyn’s Voice, Kaleidascope K9’s, Close to Home, and the Portage APL.
All dogs are vaccinated, heartworm tested, and dewormed. Donations of flea and heartworm meds are always appreciated! Of course, they have need of many other items you can donate as well. A quick stop in the pet section of supermarket or Petco where you can add a bag of food to your cart is always appreciated. Paper towels, bleach, dog treats…so many things that are inexpensive for you when you just purchase one or two, but very costly if one has to provide for dozens of dogs each day.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
And the best way to honor Adopt a Shelter Dog Month is by…adopting a shelter dog, of course! Find the right four-legged friend for you by clicking this Petfinder link [https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelterid=OH184] which will take you to all the Portage Dog Warden animals that are available for adoption…

Rabies and Micro-chipping Clinic
On Saturday, November 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. the warden’s office will be hosting a rabies and micro-chipping clinic. Be sure to get there early as it’s first come-first serve.

Let’s all join together to support the Portage County Dog Warden before this month is over by either adopting a furry member into our home or sharing the need with everyone we know.
