Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays where everyone feels like they need to make a grand gesture like going to a fancy dinner, buying expensive jewelry, taking a romantic trip… The idea is typically to give something so great, so big and so expensive that your significant other can’t help but know just how much they mean to you.
It has however, come to my attention that, just like you can’t buy love, you can’t buy a card big enough to prove your love. There is nothing wrong with expensive gifts, fancy dinner dates or romantic movies. However, if you are looking for an intimate, creative, cost effective way to say, “You are the love of my life,” you may want to take a look at some of the ideas below.
1. Romantic Night In.
Pick a meal to prepare together. It can be something simple like homemade pizzas, or something complicated and fancy like filet mignon. Put away the cell phones, play a game and engage in conversation. Rent a movie (it doesn’t even have to be romantic if that’s not what the two of you are into). Give back massages. Enjoy each other’s company.
2. Go on a Spontaneous adventure.
It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Go for a walk around your town, or a neighboring town, and visit the places you haven’t been, window shop, take pictures and make memories. Bring a picnic lunch to a local park if the weather is nice enough.
3. Go Skating.
Learning to ice skate can be very romantic and, depending on where you live, affordable as well. Of course, if you don’t have an ice skating rink near you, find a roller skating rink and do the cute couple’s skate, or have races and be competitive. Everyone has their own romantic language.
4. Have a hot breakfast date!
Who doesn’t love breakfast foods? Whether you go to ihop, the waffle house or make a big breakfast yourself, heart-shaped pancakes are a perfect start to the day of love, and you can plan out the rest of your day’s activities together!
5. Go to a concert.
There are always local bands to check out. Find a concert nearby and possibly discover your new favorite song together.
6. Go to a Drive-In Movie Theater
It’s the ideal movie date because, in the solitude of your own car, the two of you can laugh and discuss the movie to your heart’s content.
7. Teach each other something!
If you’re into crafts and he’s got tools, have him help you create a beautiful craft project you couldn’t do on your own. With paint, vision, laughter and a hammer, you’ll find out just how much fun it is to work together – especially when you love someone.
