While the calendar claims that spring arrived weeks ago, now that April has arrived, it finally seems that Mother Nature agrees. So after being cooped up all winter long, it’s time to get outside and enjoy all this new season has to offer. The Portage Park District has plenty of options to help you and your family spring into the season.

Skinny Dipping, Anyone?

Although amphibians are the only ones who’ll be swimming at the Lunar Eclipse/Vernal Pool Skinny Dip event, people are encouraged to come and witness. You’ll gather at the vernal pools – seasonal basins of water that provide a safe habitat for salamanders and frogs to take their first dip of the season. Dress for the weather. You won’t need a swimsuit or towel, just be ready to join the fun at the Morgan Preserve on April 4 from 8-10 p.m.

Go Birding

At several times throughout the month, park naturalists will host birding walks at many of the park’s locations throughout the county. But don’t worry — you don’t need to be an ornithologist, just an enthusiast, and maybe a bit of an early bird because the walks begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Dress for the weather and be prepared to find out if the early bird really does catch the worm!

On the Hunt

If you’re looking for a sneaky way to motivate your kids to hike, why not join in the Wildflower Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, April 11? You’ll visit Shaw Woods, where you’ll be among the very first folks to check out this newly opened park. In addition, you’ll have fun exploring with your kids while you search for trillium, marsh marigolds and coltsfoot. When the hunt is over, I bet they won’t even know they were hiking.

Take a walk, a hike or ride your bike

Portage Parks manages 14 miles of hike and bike trails, connecting communities across the county and with other regional trails. Whether you choose to visit the Headwaters Trail, Berlin Lake Trails, Seneca Ponds, the Portage Hike & Bike Trail or any of Portage Park District’s locations, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for your family’s outing.

From hiking and biking, geocaching to naturalist-lead activities, the Portage Park District has a plethora of options to inspire you and your family to spring into springtime. Adventure awaits – all that’s missing is you! Click here for more information on other events and park locations.
