Having flowers in your home is a real treat. They add brightness and color to whatever room they’re in, and they make the room smell amazing. It might seem like a waste though, since most cut flowers don’t last long. But, believe it or not, there are a few things that you can do to keep your fresh cut flowers happy and healthy for a little bit longer, according to Teleflora.com
1. Research
There are certain ways that a flower has to be stored, and not everything is the same for every type of flower. While you don’t have to put in as much time and effort with cut flowers as you do planted ones, it’s still helpful to look up ways to make certain types of flowers last longer.
2. Change Water Daily
Checking the water is one of the easiest ways that you can keep your flowers fresher for longer. Sometimes – especially when you let water sit – bacteria can build inside the water. These bacteria can clog the stems of your flowers and keep them from absorbing the water in the vase. You should also make sure to clean the vase before you refill it with water, and make sure that the water is at room temperature.
3. Invest in Flower Food
Flower food gives your flowers the essential vitamins that they’re missing out on by being chopped off. How much flower food and the kind of flower food that you add will vary on the type of flowers that you’re keeping alive (this is where research comes in handy.) No matter what kind or how much you’re adding, the best time to add is when you’re changing out the water.
4. Re-Cut The Stems
You don’t have to do this every day, but once every few days, it’s a safe idea to take the flowers out and re-cut the stem just to be safe. You don’t have to cut off too much of the stem. You should, however, always cut at an angle to help the flower get more water. Be careful not o smash or pierce the stems and destroy water vessels.
5. Keep in a Cool Area
While some flowers need more sunlight than others, keeping your flowers out of direct sunlight helps them more in the long run. Find a nice, room temperature spot for them where they’ll stay nice and hydrated for a longer amount of time.
