It’s summer, and my love of espresso-based beverages is at an all-time high. I could write poetry about how the scent of this elixir of the gods brings to mind a long-ago trip to beautiful Italy — and the gorgeous art, culture and countryside I experienced there. And, while that may be true, I’ve realized that what I most appreciate, at least lately, about this strong, intense beverage is its ability to quickly and efficiently super-charge my day.
Espresso, where for art thou?
When the day promises to be especially hectic, how I love to brew a tiny pot of liquid energy early in the morning. I may not have time to brew a pot of regular joe, and definitely can’t sit still long enough to finish a cup or two, but a quick-brewed, double-shot of espresso, combined with a bit of steamed milk really fills my early-morning caffeine requirement, and STAT. It may not seem like the breakfast of champions, but it sure keeps this working mamma of two on her toes until lunchtime.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
On a warm summer afternoon, when the to-do list is a long way from being to-done, a couple shots of espresso over ice, with a dollop of milk and a splash of flavored syrup, give me the kick I need to power through the end of my day. It’s a little piece of heaven, sucked down through a straw. And, while it’s true that espresso is a wonderful addition to tiramisu and other decadent chocolate desserts, who has time for fancy desserts? Good thing a straight shot of espresso pairs wonderfully with any type of chocolate – but then again, what doesn’t?
I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)
Is it possible that poet E. E. Cummings may have found his inspiration for his most famous work not solely in his love of a woman, but in adoration of espresso-based beverages? While it’s definitely more convenient to carry it in a travel mug, once that lovely liquid enters the bloodstream, I must confess that my heart beats a bit faster. So, technically, you might conclude that, just like the esteemed E.E., I also carry it in my heart. That’s definitely something to ponder while enjoying your morning jolt.
