Phenology refers to key seasonal changes in plants and animals from year to year – such as flowering, emergence of insects and migration of birds – especially their timing and relationship with weather and climate. Learn more how you can participate in tracking nature at www.usanpn.org.

Magnolia Scale Egg Hatch

As the common name suggests, Magnolia scale, Neolecanium cornuparvum, is a frequent pest of magnolia species including star, saucer, and cucumber tree. These large, easily seen insects cause damage to trees by attaching themselves to the trees vascular system and feeding on the sap. They can kill entire branches and weaken the tree.

Branches are often black with mold that grows on the insect’s excrement which is known as honeydew. This sticky honeydew often covers objects under the tree, causing a nuisance.

Banded Ash Clearwing Borer

Banded Ash Clearwing Borer Adult Insects Emerge

The banded ash borer generally attacks only unhealthy trees. Consequently, one of the control recommendations is to keep trees in good condition by pruning out damaged wood and maintaining good cultural practices such as proper watering and fertilization.

Young trees should be wrapped from the soil surface up to the first large limb to prevent sunburn and borer attack.
