Wild Hikes Challenge Done in a Day!

A new challenge for our Wild hikers?!  Daniel Mars, Portage Parks Maintenance Worker III, and his sister, Marissa, completed all eight trails from the Wild Hikes challenge in one day.  Dan started running 17 years ago when his doctor encouraged him to get into shape.  Since then he’s run 15 marathons and one ultra marathon.  Are you up for the challenge?  You may complete your Wild Hikes Challenge anytime between now and December 31.

Volunteers

Thank you Kent Urban Forestry Class!

Kent City Schools’ Career Tech program, Urgan Forestry/Landscape Horticulture, recently teamed up with the Portage Parks staff to plant over 70 trees, shrubs and plants at Trail Lake Park.  The plantings included two evergreen screening projects and landscaping around the park entrance sign.  A special thank you to all of the students for their hard work and to teachers, Tom Franek and John Lange for their partnership, guidance and expertise.

Wild Hikes Challenge 2020 – Year of the Owl

2020 ushers in the Year of the Owl for the Portage Park District Wild Hikes Challenge.  Our trusty mascot, Owlbert, is particularly excited about this year’s theme. Owls are fascinating, mysterious creatures that are abundant in our county.
To participate complete 8 of the following trails before December 31st to earn a hiking staff (1st year) and/or a 2020 Wild Hikes medallion. Forms can be downloaded here.
