Are you a parent or teacher of a high school student?
Do you know some talented photographers looking for a purpose to take pictures?
Do you have artists who want to show their work to the public?
Are you looking for ways to encourage their efforts?
Are you looking for a venue through which they can publish some of their best works?
Are you a college student who would like to share your own writing, art, or photos with a larger audience?
Portage News is looking for students to help populate our online newspaper with local, wholesome, positive submissions appropriate for all ages. This could be a terrific opportunity for students regardless of the school they attend – home, private, or public.
What better way to encourage the development of their skills than to attach a very meaningful purpose to it – getting published! Listen to what Chickering and Gamson have to say regarding learning from their Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education:
“Learning is not a spectator sport. Students do not learn much just by sitting in classes listening to teachers, memorizing pre-packaged assignments, and spitting out answers. They must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experiences and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves.”
We can help add a whole new and exciting dimension to learning by providing the opportunity for practical application of these creative arts.
What can students contribute to Portage News?
- Photos of events around town
- Stories and photos about a local organization, a school game, a field trip
- Pair up a student photographer with a student writer and have them create a joint submission for us!
- Creative writing stories completed in class, observations at the local bakery, a day spent with a business owner, how they raised funds for the local APL, the process used to create their last piece of artwork…
The list is endless and the personal gratification has far-reaching implications for their future ventures.
Portage News is the only online local publication that reports strictly positive content in Portage County. We think there are many more positive things going on out there than we are led to believe and that it’s time to shift the focus to that truth. We’re all about building people and communities up rather than burdening them down with only negative news. Find out more about our mission HERE.
If you are interested in enriching your students’ learning experiences in this way, please contact us HERE through the form. We’ll gladly share our content guidelines. We can’t wait to hear from you!
