Animal Rescues
Recently Happy Trails has assisted with farm animal rescues in six counties, including Portage, Summit, Mahoning, Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, and Guernsey. We have welcomed a young calf who is now named Nelson, two goats named Venus and Serena, several horses, and an assortment of chickens, ducks, and roosters into our rehabilitation and recovery program. While some of the animals are doing very well, sadly we lost one of the horses last week, a four year old Thoroughbred gelding. We named him Durango, and will have a tribute to him posted on the website soon.

Holiday Wish List
A lot of folks have been asking what items would be good to donate for the animals for Christmas, so we put together a special holiday list to help out. See below.
Tails
Exciting News! Two rescued horses, Austin and Kate, have been accepted into the final stages of clinical trials at OSUVTH (Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital) in Columbus with regards to a new medication that may help horses with lameness and arthritis issues. They will be residents at the vet hospital for several weeks while the medication is administered and documented. What a great opportunity to possibly help these horses with their lameness issues and to help pave the way for this pain relief to be available to other horses as well.
Willis the pot belly pig and Zinger the pot belly pig both visited OSU for unusual tumors that appeared on both pigs. After a biopsy was inconclusive, Willis was scheduled for surgery to remove the mass on his side. Oddly enough, when it came time for surgery, the mass had shrunk and nearly disappeared, making surgery unnecessary. Crazy. The mass on Zinger was diagnosed as a fatty tumor, and no further treatment was deemed necessary. So what a relief for both piggies!
Zagato the horse was taken to Cleveland Equine Hospital after a possible colic scare last week. After IV fluids and being monitored for several days, all seems well and he is being released today in time to spend the holidays with his foster family.
