The Chagrin Falls Park Community Center is pleased to announce two upcoming workshops: Nutrition on the Go at the Chagrin Falls Park Community Center (7060 Woodland Avenue, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023) on April 16, 2014 and the King Kennedy Community Center (6660 Garfield Road, Ravenna, OH 44266) on April 23, 2014; both will be from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This event is funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health in honor of Minority Health Month.

Each year in Ohio, and across the nation, the month of April is set aside to focus on minority health issues. Minority Health Month was created in April of 1989 as a high visibility health campaign to promote healthy lifestyles, provide crucial prevention information, and gain additional support for on-going efforts to improve minority health year round.

Life expectancy and overall health have improved in recent years for most Americans; however, not all Americans are benefiting equally from these advances. For too many racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, good health is elusive since appropriate care is often associated with an individual’s economic status, race, and gender. There is a disparity in health status between minority and majority populations in Ohio.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for multiple diseases including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. The workshops will be presented by Beth A. Czerwony MS,RD,LD, a licensed dietician from the Cleveland Clinic. Topics covered will include recipes for healthy meals, fortifying diets with colorful fruits and vegetables, importance of families eating together, how to easily prepare nutritious meals, and making healthier fast food choices.
