Welcome to Bow-Wows & Meows!

This weekly feature will share fun and interesting pet ‘tales’ – everything from helpful tips, funny stories, breed information, great links…really anything having to do with pets. And not just limited to dogs and cats – all pets are included here! Your stories are welcome and encouraged! Special focus will be placed on the local Portage animal shelters and rescues that have pets for adoption, so be sure to check weekly to see who might be eagerly waiting for their FURever home!

First up:

The Portage County Dog Warden and Shelter

Did you know?

For every human born today in the United States, 45 cats and 15 dogs will be born?

Six to eight million will end up in shelters?

About half will be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough homes?

And too many to count will just be left roaming about trying hard to make it in what they must deem to be a very sad, lonely, and tough place to live – unless someone comes to their rescue!

The Portage County Dog Warden is NOT just about pulling animals off the street and throwing them into kennels until they can find ‘something’ to do with them. They have close to 40-50 dogs at any given time and each dog is vaccinated with a parvo/distemper, bordatella and rabies.  A heartworm test is done on all adult dogs and other age appropriate vaccinations are given in a timely manner.

MYTH

The Portage Co. Dog Warden’s Office and Shelter euthanizes dogs after so many days. This is FALSE FALSE FALSE!!!! No time limits are in place. Their website states, “Many dogs pass through our door on a yearly basis – from owner surrenders to dogs found as strays, all looking for a good loving family to adopt them. Last year alone we had about 700 dogs come through our shelter.” Learn more about the The Portage County Dog Warden HERE.

NEW! PetFix Clinic

The Portage County Dog Warden is committed to making pet ownership affordable for as many families as possible. For that reason, they have partnered with PetFix Northeast Ohio. Spay and neuter services are offered to qualifying pet owners of dogs and cats on their 33 foot mobile unit which is staffed with licensed veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians and animal care technicians. Pets are operated on in the morning and released in the afternoon to their owners with home care instructions and names of local veterinarians to call in case of post operative emergencies. What wonderful program that enables families to keep their much-loved pets!

Find out the details HERE then email [email protected] to sign up for the next available appointment.

The Portage County Dog Warden’s Office and Shelter does not receive funding from the state or county (tax money). We survive solely on what is donated and funds from dog licenses.
