It’s June fellow herb nerds! How does thy garden grow? I thought I might reveal mine – probably not as cool as many of yours, but this is a ‘from scratch’ project, so it will really be a couple of years before things look as ‘herby’ and ‘flowery’ as I want them. But I’m having lots of fun all the same – which is important!

1. My bare plot.

This is my plot as of last fall. Not much to see. It actually looks more like a driveway….and certainly had the rocks to go along with it. The railroad ties are all 8 feet long, and across the front is 12 feet. Not terribly big.

2. Dreaming in February 2013

You know how THIS goes! Garden catalogs come. You sit in comfy chair by fire. You drool over beautifully designed cottage gardens and outlandish decorative veggie plots. So to keep myself from going broke, I did an art project. That handsome black kitty is Chubbs. He is supposed to be the guardian….LOL!

2 x 8’s were placed in front of the ties to allow more dirt to be added because it sloped toward the back too much. Notice that dandy growth of unwanted choke cherry in the back. But it was no match for my son and his two friends who had a pretty nice twig pile in about two hours…and there was only one sliced finger during the whole demolition process!

My neighbor has quite a stock pile of treasures (junk) that are always begging for attention. I found some old rusty rims, decorative brick, and weathered, dismantled wooden steps and began the planting process! There are cukes, squash, and black eyed susans in front of the rims which I hope will crawl up around them. The left corner in pots has lemon verbena plants – yummy fragrance! Catnip – still in pots here – is behind what will be my sign, and a lovely purple gerbera daisy is in the large pot on the left.

This week I added the bright yellow salpiglossis which will get to be 3 feet tall, and inside the decorative brick section, I planted some very fragrant lemon thyme. The pot at the front right is a deliciously scented pineapple sage. I also dug a hole for the catnip, placed an old plastic tupperware container without the bottom in it, then put the catnip inside that and covered it. I hope it will discourage the vigorous growth a bit! Of course, Chubbs has a different opinion…

As for Chubbs – this is much more to his liking. This catnip is on the back deck and has grown from a tiny plant that I thought would never survive the cold. But it has flourished and will need lots of trimming. It now is about six inches higher than the deck floor, so Chubbs can just lie down next to it and eat freely as he gazes up at me with those googley eyes…

The sunflowers next to it are also really taking off now. I wonder which will be taller?!
