This is the time of year when we tend to be more aware of those who don’t have as much as we do or who cannot be home for the holidays. People often ask us at geauganews.com and at portagenews.net if we know of ways they can volunteer or if we know of tangible things they can do to help those in need.
Here are two very easy ways to help as much or a little as you can at the Reed Memorial Library.
These are both wonderful ways to introduce young children and remind older ones that the holidays are about giving. Starting at a young age, our children need to learn the importance of being a part of the community they live in by volunteering and sharing something of themselves, whether that be time, effort, material. or monetary donations. Why not make giving as a family an annual part of your holiday traditions?

November 1-27
The library would also like to make the holidays a little brighter for our service members in the military by collecting holiday cards through the month of November. Patrons of all ages may bring in their own cards or choose one that is supplied by the library. Children can write in a card or bring a colored picture. We ask that the card not have any glitter. No envelopes necessary. A decorated table will be set up on the main level of the library to sign a card or write a message. The library will cover the postage.
November 1 – December 9
Reed Memorial Library will be collecting hats, gloves, scarves, and socks on behalf of the Center of Hope. Donations will be displayed on a special holiday tree and given to the Center of Hope. The Center of Hope is a nonprofit organization that provides hot meals, food pantry service, warm clothing and other essential services for residents in need. New and gently used items, as well as monetary donations, are appreciated.
