…..and they’re still making customers happy four years later!
Some people like to take risks. Perhaps they are just spontaneous on-the-spot decision makers or go strictly by gut feelings. Who knows. But back in 2009 Kim Sumwalt and Jodie Fiala were in such a situation. Kim had always had a passion for cooking, and Jodie had a customer service background, though she had never worked in a kitchen. “We purchased the business at an auction on a whim and opened at 5 a.m. on Black Friday 2009,” says Jodie. Four years later, Jake’s Eats is still serving up satisfaction!
“Been there twice since I moved to the area. Great comfort place to grab breakfast and lunch. Friendly staff and good food! I’ll be sure to be back!”

Who is Jake, you may ask. Where is he? ‘HE’ does not exist. Jake’s stands for Jodie and Kim’s Eats J-A-K-E-S.
“I grew up in Mantua, graduated from Crestwood in 1988, and moved back to Mantua in 2010 after opening Jake’s,” says Jodie, adding that both she and Kim find getting to know the customers the best part about owning your own business. Trying to convey to those around them their deep passion to serve good food at a fair price with excellent customer service is sometimes a challenge, but they have obviously done something right according to another reviewer:
“Simple, focused menu covering American classics that is executed very well with attentive service. Love the fresh cut french fries! Daily specials are delicious and change to offer something for everyone.”

Homemade items are especially loved on their menu which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes. “We make all our desserts, including the ice cream, and serve homemade soup daily. Come in and try some of our homemade soups made daily, Chicken Dumpling, Stuffed Pepper, Corn Chowder, Clam Chowder. We hand press our hamburgers several times a day. We make some of our salad dressings and are slowly becoming known for our White French Dressing. We make our veggie burgers with three types of beans, vegetables, and seven spices.” Who doesn’t love homemade ice cream – even in the middle of winter!
Everything on their menu sells, but the most popular sandwich is the Rueben – 5 ounces of corned beef, sauerkraut, and swiss cheese on rye. “Also a must try is our Fried Pickles,” says Jodie. “We hand bread them with a special flavor that makes them unique.”
Jake’s Eats is also known for their All You Can Eat Specials after 4 pm.
