Portage Parks is preparing for our new future. We’re updating our strategic plan to be followed early next year with development of a countywide park master plan that will guide park improvements and the development of new parks and trails once the proceeds from our first ever levy start coming in next spring. Stay tuned for ways you can provide input over the next year in the process, too.

New Park Commissioner

Join us in welcoming our newest Park Commissioner Scott McKinney who brings a broad range of talents and love of the parks to our governing board. Scott was sworn in as the newest member of the Park District Board of Commissioners, where he shares his passion for parks and community, using his wide range of professional skills.

Butterfly Count

Above are our friends from the North American Butterfly Association and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History Judy Semroc and Larry Rosche leading the annual Butterfly Count hike at Towner’s Woods–always a great time to see and learn about all kinds of natural wonders.

All About Bats

Our partners from Summit Metroparks (Mike Johnson) and Davey Resource Group (Ana Burns, Shawn Bruzda and Adam Benshoff) recently presented a program on bats with an up-close look at three Big Brown Bats that were netted.

Join Us in Exploring Nature

Join Portage Park District staff and volunteers on upcoming guided nature hikes and programs to learn more about our local natural environment and your Portage Parks. The hikes also can count towards the Wild Hikes Challenge! Just hike 8 of this year’s designated trails before December 31 to earn a hiking stick and brass tag, this year commemorating the “Year of the Salamander.” You can hike on your own or with a group at one of the guided hikes. Forms are available at the Park District website, or by calling 330-297-7728. Find the dates and descriptions of September and October hikes HERE. Don’t miss out on the beauty of fall – hit the trail!
