Free JS Horsemanship BUILDING BALANCE 101
Demonstration and Equine Sports Therapy – Saturday, June 22, 2013
Building Balance In Hand, the 3rd and final segment of JS Horsemanship’s FREE Building Balance 101 demonstrations, will be held this Saturday, June 22, at Scenic Run Equestrian Center in Novelty OH. At the previous hands on demonstrations, Beginning Balance in the Round Pen and Building Balance On Line, attendees enjoyed learning a whole new way of communicating with their horses from Joan Sladek, professional horse clinician.
Joan Sladek, Certified John/Josh Lyons Instructor, completes the ground skills series with a focus on In-Hand with bridle training. Continuing to present information based upon her education, approach, and philosophy, Joan will expand upon the emotional, mental, and physical attributes, moving both human and horse from the ground to the saddle.
Building Balance 101 is diversified and offers much to horse owners of all riding disciplines. Leveraging the language and relationship established in the first two segments, Round Pen and On-Line, Joan concludes with an explanation on pressure and release. With the round pen and on-line practice, a baseline of communication is in place, and the ABC’s converge into words forming the story.
Educating others and sharing her knowledge of horse mechanics and behavior is key in Joan’s aspirations to help others’ pursuit of a safe, easy, and fun ride. The In-Hand demo addresses the natural motions of the horse including raw, forward motion and its natural reaction to pressure. On the ground and equipped with dressage stick, headstall, and reins, Joan will explain three quadrants of the horse and how each plays a role in managing your horse’s movement.
The techniques or exercises will encompass:
- engaging/disengaging the hip
- lateral flexion
- shoulder control
All of these aide in the horse’s ability to transfer weight for balanced riding and emergency stops.
It will be interesting to watch how the story unfolds.
Will this be a chapter of immediate success or patient persistence?
Perhaps an adventure, an easy read or a comedy?
The relationship and communications will be pertinent as the horse and human take one another through a series of questions and answers. Will the horse’s natural “reaction” be of resistance or a “response” of “give”? For both horse and human, the process of learning evolves into knowing. It is a practice that can be both frustrating and rewarding. This phase of communication can sometimes flow in a path of reaction (emotional), resistance (thinking), and ultimately response (physical). Ah Hah! Another chapter of your “best seller” is complete.
The Building Balance In Hand demonstration is FREE.
It is a live demonstration instructed by certified clinician Joan Sladek of JS Horsemanship. Participating in the event is “Diamond,” a 12 year old paint used initially for reining, and now for fun and safe trail rides and lessons.
The day’s agenda includes an equine physical and therapeutic presentation featuring Speedy Graham of Equine Sports Therapy and complements of JS Horsemanship. Lunch is “on the barn” courtesy of Scenic Run Equestrian Center and JS Horsemanship.

J.S. Horsemanship takes people to the horse, giving them information about horse behavior which sometimes reveals new information about themselves. When people enter the Building Balance 101 program, they have a goal in mind. JS Horsemanship does too. And that’s to help people recognize small, incremental, and sometimes personal victories that line the path to achievement. The BB101 program sets the platform from which riders can launch into a specific riding discipline (Jumpers, Dressage, Reining, Trailride, etc.) knowing a lot, a whole lot, about their horse’s capabilities and willingness. JS Horsemanship is a strong advocate for establishing relationships among local horse owners and trainers as well as area businesses and educational services. These relationships reinforce our goal to bring about a cohesive network of horse enthusiasts wishing to expand their own potential and their knowledge of the horse.
Those who will have attended all three demos, you will be entered to win a private lesson with Joan!

Everyone learned and had fun. Its good to know what our hands on a line do to our horses. Its good to be on the other end of the line and find out what our horses feel when we start talking with our lines.
